From a photograph by Gian Paolo Barbieri I want to paint a number of versions of it. It is a provocative and sexy photo. She could be a prostitute or a totally innocent native or something much more. That is for you to decide but she has an intelligent, knowing, look. Perhaps she is justly proud of her body and pleased to have it photographed and quite unselfconscious about it. This semi-abstract impression in the first version uses strong outlines in black and red with flat colour filling in the segments. The challenge in painting like this is to express the essence of the character in the simplest outlines, the smallest number of shapes and the fewest colours, giving it an uncluttered dramatic impact. I capture her character and something of her colour using soft browns for her calm mood and hot bright reds to express her vibrant sexuality. Keywords: abstract nude female
